Brands are without question the way to go moving forward. No matter the industry you’re in, the best thing you can do is to create a brand.

That’s because people trust brands. If you continuously provide value and establish yourself as an authority, you will thrive for years to come.

So, is it still possible to create a clothing business? Luckily, yes. Obviously, it was better if you would have started it a couple of years ago, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still do it.

Streetwear clothes look really cool and there’s really no better feeling than to see people wear the clothes that you created. However, keep in mind that you will need to work hard for this to happen.

If you like how streetwear looks like but you have no previous experience as an entrepreneur, the first thing to keep in mind is this.

The most successful streetwear brands are luxury brands. It might seem weird, but it’s true.

Therefore, if you want to build a clothing brand, you will need to learn how to build a luxury brand. This already changes a lot of things and puts you in another frame of mind.

That’s because luxury brands are not like any other brand. Normal brands are all about affordability and quality.

Luxury brands are more about status and exclusivity. Therefore, it’s not the same thing and you will need to approach is differently.

Supreme is one of the most popular streetwear brands. Their clothes are known for being really expensive. That’s because they marketing process is really good and they always give their customers a sense of scarcity.(1,2)

So … how do you create something similar? Well, it’s really not that complicated. You just need to reverse engineer a process that is proven to work and you will get similar results.

HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE YOUR BRAND?

One of the biggest problem beginners face when creating their first streetwear brand is differentiating themselves from everything else that’s on the market.

If you don’t manage to do this, you will leave a lot of money on the table. You want to avoid being average at all cost, as you will really struggle to keep your business going.

There are literally hundreds of streetwear brands that struggle at the bottom of the fashion industry. So, why would someone choose to buy from you, when they can buy from someone else?

You could say that your products are cheaper than the competition’s. The problem with that is that we already established the fact that the most successful clothing brands are luxury ones, therefore they have expensive products.

The price is the one factor that creates exclusivity and scarcity and you don’t want to lose that. Otherwise, you will end up at the bottom fighting for scrapes.

Luckily, there are a couple of other things you can do in order to differentiate yourself.

For example:

  • Multiple categories (shoes, sweaters, pants, etc.)
  • Your origin story (why did you start your brand, where did you do it, how much did you struggle in the beginning, etc.)
  • Audience (target the skateboard market, the parkour market, etc.)
  • Style (combinations of colors, cool designs, etc.)

These are just a couple of things you can do in order to be different. However, there are many more you can experiment with.

The most important thing is to keep in mind you are building a luxury brand, and not a generic streetwear brand.(3)

Differentiation is very important and you want to be successful at it. However, your price will need to be quite high for all your products. This is how you establish yourself as a luxury brand.

HOW TO CREATE A STREETWEAR BRAND NAME

A clothing brand name is very important. You can usually tell that a brand is a streetwear brand by its name alone.

Therefore, you will need to choose the right name for your business. But it’s not all about being creative and inspired.

Even if you think that being creative is good enough, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

You need to have a name that stands out. This is very important, as it will help you with the differentiation factor as well.(4)

The best thing you can do is to compile a list with your most important competitors. After that, you should choose a name that will sound different from the names on the list.

For example, Google has nothing to do with glasses. However, it is one of the most profitable companies on the planet.

It doesn’t need to have anything to do with glasses. But you surely noticed that it sounds different.

HOW TO PROMOTE A STREETWEAR BRAND

Now that you’ve chose a name, it’s time to go to the fun part.

Marketing is my favorite thing about building a business because it sparks up your creativity.

As mentioned earlier, you will need to market yourself as a luxury brand. Therefore, the process will be a bit different as opposed to marketing a normal brand.

You will need to emphasize the fact that your brand is exclusive and your products are scarce. Also, your customer will benefit from a higher status.

How do you do that? Well, the easiest thing you can do is create a couple of products. Not a lot, but a couple.(5)

For starters, you can create about 10 products in total, so that you emphasize the fact that your products are exclusive.

After that, you can do what other successful streetwear brands are doing in order to make more sales.

HAVE A WEBSITE

You need to create your own website in order to have a successful business. No matter what people tell you, this is clear as daylight.(6)

We live in the era of technology, therefore we need to adapt. Having a website is crucial for your business. People need to find you somewhere.

Think of your website as your headquarters. It’s like your digital home and you need to treat it as such.

Also, it’s pretty cheap to build. You need a good web hosting service, like Bluehost and that’s it. It costs like $3 per month and it’s very fast.

INFLUENCERS

Most successful entrepreneurs are promoting their brand via influencers. Social media has become very popular in the last decade, so we need to take advantage of it.

Instagram influencers have tens of thousands of followers and they are very affordable. Paying for shoutouts is a very affordable way to promote your brand.(7)

For less than $100, you will be able to reach a lot of people that are interested in your products. Don’t neglect this opportunity, as you are very lucky to have it.

RETAILERS

Having a website is essential for your business, but you will also need to sell your products in a physical shop.

If you think that’s complicated, you’re most certainly wrong. If you have a professional website and social media presence, it is very easy.

After you market your brand on social media with the help of the influencers, you will have an easy time when talking to retailers.(8)

Retailers care only about one thing: profit. Therefore, if they see that your brand is popular on the internet, they will obviously want to sell your products.

However, keep in mind that you have a luxury brand above all. Therefore, you don’t want to put your brand in any shop.

Work only with the most professional retailers and reject the ones that have cheap products in their stores.

HOW TO START A STREETWEAR STORE

At some point you will need to start your own streetwear store. That’s because every luxury brand has its own store and it conveys status and exclusivity.

The problem with that is the fact that rent is really expensive. However, that’s why you start small and build over time.

After you’ve established yourself on the internet and sold products via retailers, you will most likely be able to afford starting your own store.

If you ever entered a clothing store, you probably noticed that it has a very minimalist feel to it. That’s great, as you will need to invest less money in the design.(9)

After that, you will want to expand you reach and start a franchise, so that you can skyrocket your business. However, you shouldn’t think about that until you start being profitable online.

The best part about it is that you can start will little money and expand over time.

Starting a streetwear brand with no experience is definitely possible. Hopefully you now have a better understanding on how to do this.

In any business, it’s important to have a birds eye view before you jump in. The lack of experience is not so important, as all successful businesses were created by someone who at some point didn’t know anything about business.
